"This was an absolutely unforgettable experience, and i cant recommend this ryokan more highly! The house is over 100 years old, with a lot of original wood, glass and structure, but modernised to provide comforts like heating/air conditioning, modern toilets and bathrooms and coffee machine. The architecture of it has even placed it in some books about Ryokans. Staff speak excellent English, making it easy for non-Japanese speakers. Yoshiko showed us around and explained how everything works....

"the location was in a really quiet beautiful area near beautiful temples, it’s a nice walk, and the staff were nice and accommodating. loved that dinner and breakfast was also included, although some rooms had communal washrooms which is not good. to go the hotel is also a hike up, and latest check in is before 8 pm. we had a leaking faucet, and the rooms are really cold at night, but they do provide heaters and warm clothes."

"Matsui Honkan is our first experience at Ryokan. It was a fantastic stay. The staff were supper friendly. The served breakfast and dinner were not only delicious but also looked great in the presentation. The location of the property is excellent. Nishiki Market, Kawaramachi Street, Pontocho Alley are all within minutes of walking distance. I would recommend anyone who would like to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan. "
