At the Der Neue Zollhof buildings you can find good photography opportunities of the Medienhafen and admire the architecture of a well-known contemporary architect. Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry designed this complex of three buildings between 1996 and 1998. They replaced the harbor’s old customs building. Gehry is also responsible for designing Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
Architecture connoisseurs will appreciate the interconnecting and leaning towers of the three structures. The tallest tower is around 164 feet (50 meters) tall. Look for asymmetric characteristics, including protruding windows and sloping floors. When the sun shines, the outer buildings reflect in the stainless steel façade of the central tower.
Combine a visit to the Der Neue Zollhof with a walk around the Medienhafen to find more postmodern architecture. This includes the glass-fronted Capricorn House. Check out the red panels, which control the building’s temperature. Alternatively, enjoy panoramic city views from the observation deck of the Rhine Tower.
Photographers will enjoy a Photo Tour of the harbor. Follow a guide to the best photography locations while learning about Gehry’s creation and other notable buildings in the area. Further tour information is available on the Medienhafen’s official website.
Located in the Medienhafen, Der Neue Zollhof is a 10-minute drive from the Old Town. Pay-and-display parking is available nearby. Public transportation, such as the metro or tram, is a cheaper option. Alternatively, it is a 30-minute walk from the city center.
