Browse the luxury brands on display beside the picturesque canal and elegant bridges on one of Germany’s busiest upscale commercial avenues.

Königsallee is a charming shopping boulevard separated by a scenic tree-laden canal in the heart of Düsseldorf. Fashion showrooms and high-end shops flank the sides of this wide avenue. Spend an afternoon exploring the boutique stores along the 0.6-mile (1-kilometer) commercial esplanade.

The boulevard runs from north to south, with the western side a little quieter. Stroll along the eastern sidewalk for shops, restaurants and cafés. Stop for a meal and watch people go by on this busy avenue. Among the upmarket brands are Bulgari, Calvin Klein and Chanel. Enter some of the art galleries and inspect the works being exhibited.

Capture photos of the pretty canal, which is 102 feet (31 meters) wide. Some of the best views are from the bridges dotted along the waterfront. Stay at one of the ritzy hotels along the avenue.

See the majestic 19th-century Triton Fountain at the northern end of the boulevard. Its central sculpture features the Greek god of Triton, a large fish and children. At the southern end of the avenue is the Graf Adolf Platz, a charming park with floral displays and patches of grass that are ideal for a summer picnic.

A little north of the avenue is the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, a theater with a fascinating modern design that lights up in bright colors at night. Make your way west for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein opera house.

The avenue was established in 1804 and has since played a major role in the city’s development. Note that locals affectionately know the street as Kö. It is open at all times and free to access.

Königsallee is on the eastern side of the Rhine River in the center of Düsseldorf. Ride the S-Bahn or U-Bahn from Düsseldorf Central Station to Steinstrasse/Königsallee to get here. Consider driving and leaving your car in the parking lot by the Hofgarten. See nearby sights, such as the Düsseldorf Town Hall, the Schwanenmarkt and the Kunstakademie Gallery.
