The Kintetsu Beppu Ropeway is an immense gondola system taking passengers up to the peak of Mount Tsurumi in Aso-Kuju National Park. The journey itself is a highlight, passing through thickets of cherry blossom trees and looking back on the city. Bring your binoculars and cameras for the picturesque 10-minute ride to the top.
Arrive at the base station at the foot of scenic forested mountains. Step inside the large gondola that can seat up to 101 people and begin to ascend the ropeway. In spring, the pink hue of cherry blossom trees in full bloom graces the terrain beneath you.
You’ll get a completely different view as the seasons pass. In fall, the red and yellow leaves form a gorgeous setting, while all is green in summer. Arrive in winter to see a glossy layer of frost adorning the terrain.
Look to the east for views of Beppu. Try to make out some of your favorite attractions in the skyline. At night, it’ll appear to you as a flurry of lights that serve as a contrast to the darkness of Beppu Bay. In the distance, spot Oita City, Mount Yufu and even the Kuju Mountains on a clear day. Once at the upper station, hike for 15 minutes to reach the summit and viewpoint.
Buy tickets for a one-way or return trip and get discounts for kids. The ropeway runs daily from morning until late afternoon at intervals of 15 to 20 minutes. The gondola has been in operation since 1962 and its cable is 1.1 miles (1.8 kilometers) long.
The Kintetsu Beppu Ropeway is in the western part of the city. Drive west from the city center for 4 miles (6 kilometers) to get here in roughly 15 minutes. Free parking is available at the base of the gondola. If you have more time in this area, go to Kijima Kogen Park, the Beppuringo Orchards and the Yufugawa Canyon.
