Its name means "house of the sun." Located in the municipality of Tepeyahualco, it is considered the most urbanised city of pre-Hispanic Mexico due to its highly elaborate planning and symmetry in all its structures. The city was built atop a volcanic lava flow and was discovered in the mid-19th century, though it is believed to have reached its cultural peak between 150 and 200 AD, spanning approximately 867 hectares. Cantona stands out from other Mesoamerican urban centers for its complex and efficient road network; it is estimated to have had around 4,000 streets connecting the population, as well as pathways leading to fields, quarries, reservoirs, and other towns. It also featured 20 ball courts.
