Tofo Beach is one of Mozambique’s most alluring and well-loved spots. Its 5 miles (8 kilometers) of sand stretch along the Indian Ocean, where clear blue waters invite swimming, diving and surfing. Spend a relaxing vacation in this picturesque place, where natural beauty, incredible sunsets, delicious cuisine and chilled-out cocktail bars await.
There is so much you can do in Tofo Beach, but you can also choose to do absolutely nothing. Lounge on the sand, where rolling dunes make for a great picnic spot. When you get hungry, stop by one of the countless excellent restaurants serving deliciously fresh seafood. Be sure to sample the local beer, 2M, in one of the rustic beach bars.
Try diving for a relaxing experience where colorful coral reefs and rainbow-colored fish will surround you. Tofo Beach is considered one of the world’s best diving spots and you can choose from numerous diving operators. If you prefer to stay above the waves, give surfing a go. The perfect rolling waves here are ideal for beginners and pros alike. Alternatively, hire a guide and head out on a deep sea or fly-fishing trip.
Whales and dolphins are frequent visitors to Tofo Beach’s coast too. Divers may be lucky enough to spot whale sharks and manta rays year round. Humpback whales are around from June to October. Join a boat cruise to see huge whales and playful dolphins up close.
When it’s time for a break from the beach, plenty of activities are available in the wider area. Set off on a horseback riding adventure through the sand dunes and local villages, visit nearby Inhambane’s market, or enjoy a trip on a dhow, a traditional sailboat.
Maputo is the closest international airport to Tofo Beach. From here, you can rent a car or be collected by a tour operator. Inhambane Airport is considerably closer and there are several internal flights a day. The beach is small and is easy to navigate on foot or by public bus.
