One of the largest collections of palms in the world can be found tucked within a quiet residential neighborhood of Nassau.

This small national park in Nassau’s dense residential area is home to one of the largest collections of palms in the world. More like a botanic garden than a national park in the typical sense, The Retreat covers just 11 acres (4 hectares), but it is widely considered one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the city. The park was formerly a private estate, but since 1977 it has been a public garden and the base for the Bahamas National Trust. Anybody interested in native flora of the Bahamas will enjoy studying the rare and exotic species on display, while those looking for an escape from the city will love the tranquility of the park.

Guided tours can be arranged for groups visiting the park, with members of the national trust pointing out the rare palms, orchids and ferns that inhabit the gardens. Take a self-guided tour using information available from the office. Follow the map to see the vibrant hues of the red ginger plants that are dotted throughout the park or to learn about the environment of the region. A network of walking trails will lead you through the contours of the park, allowing you to explore all of its sections.

Bring a picnic to make the most of the designated picnic areas within the national park. Shaded under the low forest canopy you will be able to escape the heat and relax among the trees. Visit one of the farmers markets held in the park throughout the year for a great opportunity to sample local fruits and vegetables of the Bahamas.

The Retreat Garden National Park is located just 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the center of Nassau. Arriving at the park on foot will allow you to explore some of the lesser-seen areas of the city, while those traveling by car will find ample parking at the park. The Retreat is open weekdays and a small admission fee applies.
