Find serenity on one of New Jersey’s best beaches, where glistening jewels lie hidden in the sand and an old wreck is part of an unusual and beautiful view.

Come to Sunset Beach at dusk to find out how this section of shoreline earned its name. The gorgeous stretch of sand on the west side of Cape May Point is one of the best places in New Jersey to watch the day’s light fade away across the waters of Delaware Bay. You can also take part in a reverent flag-raising ceremony each night during summer. Stop by the beach during the day and discover lots more to see, from a World War I curiosity, to diamond-like quartz scattered across the sand.

Wander along the beach to appreciate its natural beauty and the sense of peace here. Children will enjoy searching through the sand for “Cape May Diamonds.” These sparkling stones are not really diamonds, but translucent quartz polished by the sea. Visit on a sunny day to relax with expansive views of Delaware Bay.

Stay on the beach until sunset to take part in a summer tradition that honors military heroes. For over 40 years, locals and visitors come as the sun goes down between May and September to see an American flag raised on the flagpole while the national anthem is played. Each flag is taken from the casket of a fallen soldier.

Linger on the beach after the ceremony to appreciate the sun setting with uninterrupted views over the water. Look for the remains of the S.S. Atlantus, a failed experiment in making concrete ships during World War I.

The beach has several amenities for visiting families. Enjoy the fun of mini-golf with views of Delaware Bay as you putt your way around 18 holes. Afterward, head to the nearby restaurant for a hearty meal. For spectacular views of the beach, climb to the top of the nearby World War II Lookout Tower.

Sunset Beach is about 10 minutes away from the town of Cape May by car. Entrance to the beach is free and parking is readily available. Stop at the adjacent gift shops to pick up local souvenirs.
