We love Rio Del Mar for its quietness, even though it’s walking distance to beautiful big beaches & the cement ship.

1) I had to wait 15 minutes in the lobby to check in. No one was on property. 2) I had to leave a $100 credit card for "incidentals" when there was nothing in the room or the property to be consumed

I was in the area for a class. The hotel was very clean and felt safe. Parking was easy. The room and bed were quite comfortable and the staff I interacted with was friendly and helpful.

We loved everything about the room, area, and property. They have a beautiful outdoor smoking area, with pretty plants and a fountain. (I don’t smoke, but my friend does). Our only complaint is they don’t have air conditioning. I know people tend to think you don’t need it when you’re by the beach, but the room was very warm and stuffy in the afternoon, and through the night. That might not bother most people, but it’s a big deal to me. Otherwise, it was a wonderful place to stay.

There was no hot water in the building that our room was in but they checked us into that building anyway just to have to move us later in the evening so we could have a room with hot water. One of my pillows had a blood smear on it. I called the front desk multiple times well before the time they told us the front office closed. No answer. Finally got a call back after we had already gone to sleep. When I spoke to the manager the next morning her only concern was to tell me that since I had booked through Expedia they could give me any money back. I told her I wasn’t asking for money, I thought she would think it was important to speak to her head of housekeeping. We were very disappointed with our stay at Rio Sands.

Stayed at Rio Sands for a weekend wedding--what a great find! We had a king room in the Sands Building, 2nd floor, with a lovely balcony and view toward the ocean, 2 short blocks away! Nice room, updated with hardwood floor, beachy decor. Very spacious, and nicely updated bathroom with walk-in shower! Proximity to the beach is wonderful. The included breakfast was okay, would like more fruit besides bananas, but it's enough to get you out the door. Very nice, large and clean breakfast room with fireplace and beachy feel. I would definitely stay here again!

Clean, spacious and comfortable room near Seacliff State Beach in Aptos. Easy walk to beach and restaurants. We stayed in a room with a kitchenette (gas stove, cabinets, fridge, microwave and coffee maker) but just FYI, there were NO pots, pans, plates, bowls or utensils! If guests, especially families, intend to save money by cooking meals, you'll need to bring all the above with you. Also good luck contacting the front desk. Every time one of us went to the lobby (including at check in), there was a sign saying "Will return shortly." We waited about 15 minutes or more each time, before a staff member showed up. I think they're extremely short staffed!!
