Take in some of the best views of the towers and domes of Morelia’s fine 16th-century cathedral from tranquil Plaza de Armas. Learn about the history of executions that have taken place here and see the commemorative plaques to those who died. Stroll around the pleasant gardens and take a seat in the shade of the central kiosk.
In the early 19th century the square was the site of several executions. Priests and advocates of federalism were among those who died. While the square itself dates back to the 1540s, it underwent a makeover in the mid 19th century, which was when it gained the attractive fountains, neatly planted trees and wide pathways you see today.
Find a quiet spot in the park and enjoy views of Morelia Cathedral. Above the well-tended trees, you will see the neoclassical forms of the cathedral’s famous towers and dome. Stroll along the pathways and make your way to the central kiosk. This building dates back to 1887 and features a charming iron frame and a neatly domed roof.
Read the commemorative plaque dedicated to the martyrs who lost their lives in this square. As well as the victims’ names, the plaque details the offences which cost them their lives. Close by, you can see a plaque designating the old center of Morelia as a UNESCO heritage site.
Sit at one of the park’s benches and enjoy a snack or take a leisurely walk past the flower beds and small fountains. Many say the square looks its best at night, when lights at the top of the cathedral’s columns give out a magical glow across the trees and fountains. Make sure you take a stroll here after an evening meal.
The square is located in the center of Morelia’s old town and is connected with several public transport links. It is free to enter and open at all hours.
