We just returned from a two-week stay at Casa Fuego with 4 adults and 1 teenager. (Second week was 2 adults and 1 teenager). I want to compliment the property managers Jarrod and Meagan for their hospitality, helpfulness, and responsiveness during the booking process and during our stay. Having lived in Playa Negra for 12 years, they have the local experience needed to make recommendations for tours, restaurants, etc. They were never intrusive (living in a nearby neighborhood), but were always quickly available for any needs we had. They even brough extra fans for use in the non-AC living area. I will focus this review on Pros, Cons, and recommendations.
Pros: Location right on the beech with incredible sunset views. If you surf, you couldn't ask for a better spot. The pool is extremely clean with good outdoor furniture. Plenty of beach towels and bath towers are provided. Local restaurants (inexpensive and luxury) are nearby. Privacy is good. Security, considering you are in a third-world country is good. Felt safe at all times in the neighborhood and on beach. Room ACs worked extremely well. Beds were comfortable and not worn. Unit was well cleaned when we arrived. Plenty of kitchenware, pots, pans, and appliances. Internet was reliable. Security guards in neighborhood at night. Good safe for valuables.
Cons: Ceiling fans need to be replaced for better air flow. Screen doors to outside in living area need to be replaced. Microwave needs to be replaced. You will have some bugs (it's a humid tropical environment and expected, so not a complaint). A few others things could be touched-up or improved. No clothes dryer, so you have to line dry clothes. Washer is located in separate, dimly lit room off of garage, so not the most convenient location. No dishwasher. About 5 miles of rough dirt roads to reach house, so SUV highly recommended. Drive to grocery store is 30-40 minutes, but only about 7-8 miles.
Recommendations; Download Google Map of Costa Rica prior to arrival. Cell signal availability for data throughout the country can be spotty, which can cause navigation issues when map needs to update. Be prepared for the rough roads. You won't get stuck, but the driving is slow due to ruts, pot holes, etc. DO NOT rent a sedan. You will want an SUV.
Note to owner: Didn't know how much I would miss a clothes dryer. Moving washer to better location and adding dryer would be a huge upgrade. Upgrade ceiling fans. Fix screen doors.
