The Leaning Tower of Pisa makes this walled square the most photographed square in Pisa, but its other grand structures are also worth capturing.

Unlike the paved piazzas with fountains that Italy is known for, Piazza dei Miracoli has expansive manicured lawns and is surrounded by ancient walls. Home to one of Europe’s most iconic towers, an important collection of medieval art and some of the most sacred sites in Italy, this enormous square is Pisa’s most popular attraction. Climb the Leaning Tower, discover Italy’s history and explore the cathedral, cloisters and cemetery.

The Piazza dei Miracoli and its buildings are among the most cherished attractions in Italy. The square and its monuments were constructed between the 11th and 15th centuries. In 1987, the structures were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Admire the incredible feats of architecture on the piazza. The Duomo, the Pisa Baptistry and the Leaning Tower of Pisa rise from a lawn that has been cordoned off, giving you full view of the structures despite the crowds. A fourth sacred site, the Camposanto cemetery, forms the northern wall of the piazza. Move around the square to get different angles for photos of the precariously leaning tower.

Explore the interiors of each site with a multi-attraction ticket, or choose the one most suited to you. Gaze at the Duomo’s mosaics, frescoes and historic paintings, or climb the spiral staircase that leads to the top of the Leaning Tower for views across Pisa.

Back on the square, see the beautiful contrast between the white marble of the Duomo and its freestanding clock tower with the green grass and the stone walls of the square. At night each building is illuminated by floodlights, creating an idyllic scene for more photographs.

Piazza dei Miracoli is located on the edge of the historic center of Pisa and can be visited daily. The piazza can be reached on foot from most central locations or by bus from the outskirts of the city. Secure parking is available for a fee on Via Pietrasantina, which is a short walk away.

While admission to the square is free, tickets are required for admission to the monuments and museums.
