Best time to visit?
If you check lonely planet or similar travel books, they write always that the best time to visit is during the dry season from December to April. Honestly, I think there is very much to see as well in the second part of the year. Why?
From
May till November we have the green season and September/October is the rainy season. During the green season, it rains usually 1.5 to 2 hours in the afternoon or night. Everything is green, with lots of flowers and animals. Less hot than in the dry season and no dust on the roads. From July/August there is a 90% chance you will spot whales, from July-January we have 25 minutes from here an amazing Turtle Program with where you can visit in small groups. The peak season is September/October.
September/October we have the rainy season, the same as in the green season but there is a chance of getting 2-3 days of rain without stopping.
You need to rent a 4 x 4 as the streets are in very bad shape in Costa Rica. The house is on a Hill, very private, to get to the town and around a car is essential.
