The Hôpitaux-Facultés district has a youthful and leafy atmosphere. Filled with shops and apartment complexes, this pleasant neighbourhood is also known for its parks and family activities. Split your time between the woodland parks, the Amazonian greenhouse and the concrete jungle of the college campuses.
Bring your family to the Montpellier Zoo at the edge of the neighbourhood, where varied terrain is home to more than 120 species. Stroll along the walking paths that meander around a couple of scenic lakes. Guided tours of the zoo are available, so your kids can learn about the zebras, giraffes and lions. Spot cheetahs, insects and bears among the great array of wildlife here.
One exciting highlight of the zoo is the Serre Amazonienne, an extraordinary greenhouse with trails taking you up to the canopy of its tropical trees. Marvel at the colourful frogs and other exotic creatures and hear the birdcalls and patter of the waterfalls. Beside the zoo stands the Bois de Montmaur Park, a large area of woodland with winding nature trails and open fields for picnics and sports.
For a glimpse into the city’s affluent history, head to the Domaine d’O park. At its centre is a majestic castle. The park also has elaborate gardens with ponds and fountains. Bring food and drinks for a picnic on a hot summer day, before exploring the olive grove and pine forest.
Go from old to new, when you arrive at the University of Montpellier. Walk around the spacious campus and chat with the scholars in a city known for its international student life.
The area lies in the northwestern corner of Montpellier. Take the tram to one of the its many stops, including Boutonnet, Saint-Éloi and Hôpital Lapeyronie. Visit surrounding zones such as Beaux Arts and Les Cévennes.
