Get a closer look at our ancestors at one of the world’s first sanctuaries allowing primate species to roam freely together.

Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is a marvelous sanctuary with an assortment of about 500 primates that live together in a vast jungle enclosure. The site intends to inform its guests of the troubles these playful animals face with the regression of natural habitats. Learn fascinating facts about the intelligence of our distant cousins.

Follow trails and bridges through the jungle. The wooden canopy walk stretches for 420 feet (130 meters) and offers a vista of the forest as the primates see it when they move from tree to tree. Inspect diverse vegetation that includes real yellowwood, white witchhazel and small knobwood. Embark on a monkey safari with a docent for a greater understanding of the individuals that reside here and facts relating to each species.

Get to know some of the monkeys that belong to about 18 different primate species. The main Monkeyland forest area contains 11 of these types, including the lemur, the langur, the black howler monkey, the brown capuchin and a white-handed ape. Look for your favorites in the forest. Visit nearby Birds of Eden for the bush baby, greater galago and golden-handed tamarin.

Take a break with some food at the site’s restaurant. Select from fun gifts and souvenirs with a monkey theme in the store.

Entrance to Monkeyland has a fee, with discounts for kids. Consider a combo ticket that includes Birds of Eden and the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary in the deal. The complex opens daily from morning until late afternoon. Guided tours are available in many languages.

Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is in a forested terrain in the Garden Route, a little northeast of the Keurboomstrand coastline. It stands just south of the Elephant Sanctuary and the Ollishof Private Nature Reserve and northeast of the Trogon House and Forest Spa. Drive northeast for 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Plettenberg Bay to reach the sanctuary.
