Get swept up in the beauty, culture and history that abound on the shores of this tranquil lake in the heart of Umbria’s beautiful countryside.

Lake Trasimeno is one of Umbria’s jewels. Nestled amid rolling countryside, vineyards and olive groves it is both a natural haven and a cultural treasure. Explore the villages dotted along the shoreline and discover their fascinating history and architecture, or simply soak up their peaceful atmosphere.

Indulge in some village-hopping during your stay at Lake Trasimeno. Begin at the picturesque village of Castiglione del Lago, perched high on a rocky promontory. Clamber onto the medieval walls of the Palazzo della Corgna and Rocca del Leone Fortress for sweeping lake views.

Ferry boats zip across the water, linking the small villages with the lake’s three islands. The uninhabited island of Polvese is the largest of the three and makes for a delightful visit. Enjoy the open parkland as well as the San Secondo Monastery and the Church of San Giuliano. Meanwhile, Maggiore Island is home to a quaint fishing village, an ornate Romanesque church and the Villa Isabella. Boats leave from the medieval village of Passignano, which is famed for its 14th-century Ponente Tower.

The walled medieval town of Città della Pieve rises like something from a fairy tale along the lake’s shores. It dates back to the Etruscans, and the Romans also inhabited it for a time. Yet it is most famed for being the birthplace of the painter Pietro Perugino, also known as Pietro Vannucci. Several fine examples of his work can be found within the town, including the Madonna with Child, which is inside the town’s cathedral. Breathe in as you walk down one of the narrowest alleys in Italy, one of the town’s famous landmarks.

Be sure to sample Lake Trasimeno’s excellent cuisine, which often includes local ingredients such as fresh fish and olive oil. Leave time, also, to see some Renaissance art in towns such as Castel Rigone.

The city of Perugia and its international airport are just 30 minutes’ drive from Lake Trasimeno, and there are train stations in Castiglione del Lago, Chiusi-Chianciano Terme and Terontola. Hop on the local buses and ferries to explore the area’s different towns.
