At the mouth of the Spurwink River in Scarborough, take a stroll on the white sand or paddle a kayak over gentle waves.

Higgins Beach is a favorite destination in Cumberland County. From clean white sand to great swimming conditions, it has all the ingredients for a perfect beach day in Maine. Find it in the oceanfront village of Scarborough in southern Maine.

Make the scenic 10-mile (16-kilometer) drive south to Higgins Beach from Portland. The route will take you along tree-lined country roads, a pleasant experience in and of itself.

Spread out a blanket on the white sandy beach and enjoy the sound of the lapping waves. Take a refreshing dip in the water or go surfing on the breakers. Bring a canoe or kayak and paddle up the Spurwink River.

Surfcasting is a popular activity at Higgins Beach. Cast your fishing line in the water and see if you can hook a seabass. Go farther upstream and try fly fishing in the river.

Pack a picnic to enjoy at Higgins Beach. For more dining options, venture into downtown Scarborough and sample its selection of restaurants and cafés.

On August 11, 1897, a large schooner was caught on the rocks and ran ashore near the beach. More than a century later, the remains of the ship are still visible at low tide. Watch parts of the ship come into sight as the waters recede from the shoreline.

Explore the charming neighborhood surrounding the beach. About 300 cottages make up the seaside neighborhood, along with a few inns. Stroll down its winding lanes and admire the quaint views.

There are no lifeguards at Higgins Beach, so exercise caution when you enter the water. Take advantage of on-site restrooms and shower facilities.

Visit Higgins Beach throughout the year between sunrise and sunset. Use the beach’s parking lot, which charges a per-vehicle fee. During the summer, the parking lot tends to fill quickly, so arrive early to ensure a spot.
