The Église Paroissiale du Sacré-Cœur is one of the religious landmarks of Lourdes. Construction of the church began in 1875. It has a neo-Romanesque design. Learn about the legend of Bernadette Soubirous, who was baptized in the earlier version of this church.

Walk along the cobblestones of the small plaza in front of this parish church. Gaze up at the impressive façade, which has a tall clock tower running up its center. The tower is one of Lourdes’ most iconic sights, and it can be seen from quite a distance.

At the front of the church there are three grand arches containing portals. Climb the steps flanked by potted plants and stroll through the imposing colonnade. Take photos of the pointed spire of the main tower with the verdant hills of Lourdes forming a scenic backdrop.

Inside the church is a large and spacious nave where quiet and absolute tranquility pervade. Of particular interest are the font where Bernadette was baptized and a statue of the saint under the bell tower. The tomb of Abbot Pevramale, who was priest of Lourdes during the time of Bernadette’s visions, is also worth seeking out.

Look up at the interesting designs of the chandeliers. Notice the enormous organ behind the altar and a sculpture of Christ. Colorful light from stained-glass windows shines on the organ and statue.

Learn about the history of the parish church, which replaced an earlier version that burned down. The original church was visited by the famed St. Bernadette Soubirous, who claimed to see apparitions of the Virgin Mary.

The Église Paroissiale du Sacré-Cœur is in the upper part of the town center of Lourdes. Arrive at the Lourdes railway station and walk south for around 10 minutes to reach the church. Make sure to see nearby attractions, such as the Chemin de Croix, the Museum of the Médaille Miraculeuse and the Château Fort Musée Pyrénéen. The latter can be seen on a distant hilltop from the entrance to the church.
