Daniel Barreto de Marco Square (Praça Daniel Barreto de Marco or Praça do Cova) is a popular meeting point in downtown Arraial do Cabo. It’s a place to eat, drink, shop and people-watch. Daniel Barreto de Marco Square received a makeover in 2016. The paved floor was re-laid, the kiosks were renovated and new benches were added.
On any given day, artisans from across the region come to sell their goods. Shop for clothing, handicrafts and jewelry, among other items. The square is also the setting for art and craft fairs. Sit on a bench and beneath the shade of a palm tree and observe as locals meet to chat and find respite from the hot sun.
Purchase food and drinks, such as freshly squeezed fruit juices, from the kiosks and food carts. Alternatively, eat at one of the nearby restaurants. Venues range from a pizzeria to a sandwich shop and seafood restaurants. Additional dining options line the surrounded streets.
Another fun thing to do while here is to visit the Oceanographic Museum of IEAPM. Spot a variety of multicolored sea creatures in the aquariums and browse a taxidermy display. See the huge skeleton of an orca and archaeological objects discovered underwater. Short movies explain the life of marine animals. The museum is open on weekdays.
Find the square conveniently located less than a 10-minute walk from the city’s main bus terminal. Street parking is available.
Daniel Barreto de Marco Square sits parallel to Dos Anjos Beach. This is where the city founder Amerigo Vespucci first arrived in 1503. Enjoy topping up your tan on the soft sand and swimming in the warm sea. At the northern end of the beach is Forno Port, a great place to experience the city’s fishing customs.
