Peruse museums and churches in the city center and find out about an alleged UFO landing in the scenic outskirts.

As the second city of Argentina, Córdoba contains a large share of the country’s historic and cultural sights. Picturesque lakes and undulating fields surround the large city, where revolutionary Che Guevara spent his youth. Learn about the history of this important city from the attractions that surround the central Plaza San MartínOpens in a new window.

In the southwestern corner of the plaza is CabildoOpens in a new window, recognizable by its long colonnade and colonial façade. Inspect the period furniture and archeological displays in the museum of this 16th-century structure. Adjacent is the Cordoba CathedralOpens in a new window, which is the oldest church in continuous service in Argentina. Ascend the steps of the bell tower for a view of the plaza, with its trees and benches.

Visit the Carmelite MonasteryOpens in a new window next door for a glimpse into the life and work of nuns. Its accompanying Santa Teresa Church and the Museum of Religious Art shed light on the ecclesiastic nature of the complex. Walk south for 10 minutes to reach the Sagrado Corazon ChurchOpens in a new window and admire its red tower and impressive frescos.

Having explored the cultural cornerstones of the city, make your way to the scenic villages, such as La Cumbre, Huerta Grande and the lakeside Villa Carlos Paz. To the southwest of Córdoba is Alta Gracia, where you will find the Museum of Che GuevaraOpens in a new window.

Another intriguing destination is Capilla del Monte with its Cerro Uritorco Trailhead. Many believe UFOs landed on this mountain, which you can learn about in one of the museums and shops in the quaint village.

Note that locals are called Cordobesas and are known across the country for their singsong accents. Expect hot and humid summers November through March and mild to cold winters depending on altitude.

Find the city in the shadow of the Sierra Chicas mountains in the central part of the country. A coach ride here can take up to 9 hours from Buenos Aires, which is 435 miles (700 kilometers) to the southeast. Fly direct to Córdoba Airport.

Córdoba is a historic and cultured commune with vast stretches of scenic terrain stretching across its outskirts.

Although the old centre of Córdoba is quite rundown, it has a lot of interesting architecture. On the other hand, the more modern part of the city not only has some wonderful buildings, it is also lively and full of atmosphere.
