Hear the chanting coming from the temple’s monks as you explore these magnificent historic pavilions and buildings, which sit in the shadow of Mt. Geumjeongsan.

Beomeo-sa Temple is Busan’s most famous temple and a must-visit on any trip to the city. Nestled on the edge of the stunning Mt. Geumjeongsan, the temple seems completely separate from the bustling urban hubbub which swirls around it. Soak up the tranquility and spirituality which emanates from the temple, be impressed by its beautiful architecture and enjoy the mountain backdrop and natural surroundings.

While Beomeosa Temple dates to 678 it was, along with most temples in Korea, destroyed during the Japanese Imjin Waeran invasion in 1592. It was rebuilt in 1713 and today is a magnificent example of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) temple architecture. Wander through pavilions and pagodas, gates and palaces, and see ornately decorated halls. Among many other striking features, look for the dragon's heads carved into the rafters of the main hall.

Wisteria blooms around the beautiful complex in spring, adding to the air of calm and beauty. Start by exploring the main hall, which is home to the Sakyamuni Buddha and two bodhisattvas. Iljumun is a three-story pagoda with four pillars, which dates to the 9th century and is certainly worth visiting. In addition, there are seven royal palace wings, three gates and 11 hermitages. Allow plenty of time to wander the grounds and take in all these richly detailed sights.

Opt to do a “templestay” for a truly unique experience. Stay in the temple’s own on-site accommodations and gain a special insight into the lifestyles of the monks who live and pray here.

Enjoy the temple’s beautiful natural surroundings, which have been dubbed a natural monument. Set off on one of the scenic trails across Geumjeongsan, which start from the temple. As you walk, discover flower-filled valleys and be surrounded by abundant nature.

Beomeo-sa Temple is easily accessible from the city by train and then by bus or on foot. There are parking facilities available for those who prefer to travel by car. Check the temple’s opening hours before you visit.
