Baths of Queen Giovanna (Bagni della Regina Giovanna) is the curious name for an emerald pool of seawater enclosed by limestone cliffs and a rocky beach. Hike to a nearby archeological site for a great place to watch the sunset over the Bay of Naples. The protected pool is separated by a natural archway from the open sea. It is named after Giovanna d’Angiò, the legendary queen from Naples. Queen Joan of Anjou, as she is known in English, frequently used this triangular pool because it was so secluded. The legends about Queen Joan involve secret young lovers and cruel murder plots. Ask locals to share their favorite versions of the tale.During the hot summer months this shady spot is a good place to come for a refreshing dip. Swim in the shallow water and float under the limestone, fern-covered arch that soars above the lagoon. Bring snorkeling gear, because the water is very clear and you can spot many varieties of fish. Afterward, dry in the sun on the beach or go for a walk along the coast.Follow the path to the tip of the peninsula and explore the ruins of a large Roman pavilion nearly 2,000 years old. The site is believed to have been the vacation home of Pollio Felice, a wealthy Roman citizen and historian. “Villa Pollio Felice” features in the early writings of the famous Roman poets Horace and Statius.Find the Baths of Queen Giovanna on the tip of Cape Sorrento, on the edge of town. The area is easily reached by bus with a short walk and climb. Visit the shops and bars on the cape to pick up refreshments, then follow the signs for “i ruderi romani” (Roman ruins). The route will take you along a short coastal path and down a steep staircase. For a chance to take photos of the ruins near the Baths of Queen Giovanna from the water, arrange a private cruise to the island of Capri. This boat service is a hydrofoil and leaves from Sorrento's Marina Piccola.
