With its elegant colonnade and imposing features, the Basilica de San Vicente is a masterpiece in Romanesque architecture that dates back to the 12th century. It stands just outside the city walls, on the supposed site where St. Vicente was martyred in battle with the Romans. Explore the basilica for its array of religious treasures, including a tomb and works of art.

Stroll through the elegant colonnade on the side of the basilica. See the façade at night, when it glows in yellow light. Inspect the intricate carvings of ecclesiastical beings and figures beside the large wooden portal, which leads to one of the naves.

Enter the basilica and gaze up at the impressive vaulted ceiling. Explore the three high naves and apses. Note the various domes held up by pillars in a cross shape that adds to the Romanesque style of the site.

Dine at one of the cafés with tables set up on the spacious plaza in front of the basilica. Stroll along the quaint cobbled streets of the historic center and see the nearby city walls. The basilica opens daily from late morning to afternoon and again from late afternoon until early evening. There is a small fee to enter the site. Admission is free on Sundays.

The Basilica de San Vicente is a little north of the historic center of Ávila. Arrive at the city’s main railway station and walk west for about 20 minutes or take a bus to a stop on the avenue that runs past the basilica’s entrance. Visit nearby sights, including the Plaza San Andrés and the Mosén Rubí Chapel.
