Fabulous place to stay while in Basel. The location is centrally located. The bed was probably one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on for a hotel. The bed linens and bath towels were a very nice quality. The breakfast was delicious.

The location of Hotel Marthof was perfect for what we were looking for in our 24 hour stay in Basel. We were able to walk to all the Christmas Markets and boutique shops in the area. And when we were finished at the end of the day there was a nice hot sauna and steam room to warm us. The Bohemia restaurant next door was very convenient in the evening when we didn’t want to head back out into the cold. There are two reasons I did not give five stars overall: 1. There are three steps which lead down from the bedroom area to the bathroom area and at night this can be treacherous. The hotel has installed a motion sensor light on the stairs but you have to trigger that just right when you are coming down from the top versus going up from the bottom. 2. Our room was very noisy. I understand it’s in the city but I think if we had been on the other side of the building (where there were no train tracks in the street) we wouldn’t have as readily heard the train squealing all night as we were trying to sleep. Ear plugs were of minimal help.

I arrived at Hotel Märthof on my last day in Europe before flying back to the states early the next morning. The hotel staff was welcoming and arranged for my taxi to the airport at 3:45 am the next morning (😳). The hotel appears modern and sophisticated, with dark moody colors in the lobby hallways. The room was clean and bright with a very comfortable bed and great water pressure in the modern, updated shower. The location is great- it is right near Old Town and close to the Rhine River. The autumn fair was beginning the day I arrived and I enjoyed visiting the a local plaza with local vendors and booths. Hotel staff provided me with a map with locations of the plazas with markets and gave me a free pass for trams and public transportation. I mainly wandered around looking at the beautiful buildings of Old Town. There’s also a grocery store close by if needed. The only negative were the trams that run so close to the hotel. At night there are fewer of them (reduced schedule I think) but I heard them rumble by all night. I would stay there again…I appreciated the chocolate bar they gave me upon checkout to take with me to the airport! Nothing like Swiss chocolate to celebrate a visit to a beautiful country.

The hotel and staff are exceptional. The only reason I gave 4 stars is that our room was not ready at 3 PM which is check in time. We were comped a couple of drinks at the bar for our inconvenience.

The Hotel Marthof is lovely, clean and very well located. The breakfast is very nice. It is right over a tramline so it is not quiet. Our Signature room on the 5th floor was very warm but once we opened the window it was noisy. Loved the candy bar at checkout.
