Off the coast of Espiritu Santo, this Vanuatu island offers a dream vacation, perfectly embodying the beauty of exotic and isolated South Pacific islands.

For an ideal tropical retreat, plan a leisurely vacation on the Vanuatu getaway of Aore Island. One of more than 80 islands in the archipelago, Aore is a short boat ride from Espiritu SantoOpens in a new window, Vanuatu’s largest island. Reserve some time in your planning to visit Santo as well.

Aore has all the relaxing splendor you might expect in a tranquil South Pacific island. Rest on a hammock stretched between palm trees to enjoy ocean breezes. Join an island tour on horseback. Sip tropical drinks. Have lobster and other seafood caught just hours before it is delightfully prepared for your gourmet meal.

If you’re staying on Espiritu Santo, travel to Aore for lunch at the Aore Island Resort and enjoy the amenities of beach, swimming pool and barbecue area. The resort has private boutique bungalows near the beach and a day spa. Paddle a kayak or outrigger canoe along the shoreline to view the lush vegetation. Snorkel with colorful marine life around the small pier in front of the resort. Check the ferry schedule between Aore and Phillips Wharf on the big island to catch one of several short crossings throughout the day.

The Segond Channel is narrow enough, and the waters pleasant enough, that each June avid athletes participate in the competitive 1.6-mile (2.6-kilometer) Espiritu Santo Aore Swim. Come to participate in the challenge or watch swimmers making the crossing, with locals in outriggers at their side cheering them on.

Espiritu Santo is worth a visit for a day or more. Enjoy climbing, hiking and swimming challenges on a guided tour of Millennium Cave, snorkel in blue holes and dive around several sunken World War II vessels and surplus military supplies discarded in the sea.

Travel to Santo-Pekoa International Airport from Australia or from Vanuatu’s capital of Port VilaOpens in a new window on EfateOpens in a new window. Take a short taxi ride to the wharf in Luganville and board the ferry to Aore Island, about a 15-minute boat trip. Then simply relax.
