An enormous statue of the leader of Macedonia atop his famous horse overlooks the water in a square filled with monuments.

A popular gathering spot for locals and visitors, the Alexander the Great Garden is a cement and grass plaza with fountains near the sea. Jugglers, entertainers and all types of games help create a buzzing atmosphere. Admire the impressive equestrian statue of Alexander the Great at the head of the square.

Consider the importance of the park’s namesake figure, who was educated by Aristotle and ruled the kingdom of Macedonia. He is known for his ingenious military tactics and creation of a vast empire. Study the statue of Alexander on his galloping horse, Voukefalas. The statue is 20 feet (6 meters) tall, including an imposing block podium.

Make your way around the edge of this plaza, while appreciating the stunning views of the sea. Relax on one of the benches facing inward from the edges of the square. You can also join sunbathers on the grassy patches on either side. Walk inland a little and admire the Central Circle Fountain Xarhakos.

Nearby stands the Bust of Lambros Koromilas and the Municipal Garden Theater, an open-air amphitheater that continues to offer musicals and plays.

Bring your kids to the Padiki Xara playground and inspect the Monument of Emmanuel Pappas and the National Resistance Monument. In the southeastern corner is the white statue of Konstantinos Karamanlis, the country’s former leader. Head to the northwestern part of the garden to see the iconic White Tower of Thessaloniki, an old prison where executions took place in ancient times.

Find the Alexander the Great Garden along the water of the Thermaic Gulf in the Nea Paralia neighborhood at the southern end of Thessaloniki. Walk south from the city center for about 25 minutes to arrive here. The park is open to the public at all times for free.

See some of the other attractions in this part of the city, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Macedonian Struggle Museum and Sintrivani Square.
