South of the bustle of Downtown Doha is the smaller community of Al Wakrah, with the Al Wakrah Souq a central meeting point for local residents and visitors. Although the traditional appearance of the sand and mud buildings and winding alleys resembles a historic Middle Eastern marketplace, the souq was constructed quite recently, in 2014. With capacity for hundreds of shops and restaurants, the souq offers a wide variety of choices. Purchase tea or coffee to enjoy on a bench overlooking the ocean. Select from American, Arabian, Indian, Italian and other cuisines for a delicious meal and finish with ice cream or other sweet treats. Retail choices here include clothing, perfumes, housewares, sporting goods, spices, groceries, pets and more.
A beach and corniche walkway stretch for nearly 2 miles (3 kilometers) in front of the souq, extending south along the Persian Gulf coastline. Notice a few traditional dhows on or near the shore. Walk to the Port Al Wakrah to see hundreds of other dhows at their moorings or being used by local fishermen. Go swimming or lounge on the sands of the beach at the souq or drive a few miles south to Family Beach.
Travel several miles inland to see the dhow shape in the roofline of Al Janoub Stadium, built to accommodate players and fans in major international soccer competitions. The gleaming white stadium resembles inverted hulls of dhows lined up side by side.
Drive to Al Wakrah Souq from Downtown Doha or Hamad International Airport in less than 30 minutes or arrive by public transportation in under 1 hour. Find free parking in the large lot nearby. The souq celebrates seasonal and holiday festivals with activities such as circus performances, rides and family games. Check the schedule to see if any special events are planned during your trip.
