Ada Ciganlija is a forested peninsula on the Sava River with beaches, a lake and recreational activities. As one of the city’s highlights, it draws crowds of locals and vacationers in the hot summer to its sports facilities, restaurants and lively nightlife. Stroll down the coastline and capture photos of the forest and the Belgrade skyline in the distance.
South of the peninsula, which was once an island, is the artificial Lake Sava. At one time it was part of the river. Rent deck chairs on the pebbly beach to sunbathe with family and friends. Most beach areas here are patrolled by lifeguards. Lay down a blanket on the pebbles or in a grassy park and enjoy a picnic with your family in this area, which is nicknamed Belgrade’s Sea.
The peninsula is famous for its sports options. Take part in water activities, such as kayaking, waterskiing and windsurfing. Join a soccer or volleyball game on the beach or in one of the parks. Among the highlights is the fixed crane with a 180-foot (55-meter) bungee-jumping platform.
Pick out your favorites from the array of boats docked in the lake. Cycle or roller skate along the scenic biking trails that meander through the peninsula. The area contains the Golf Club Belgrade, which has lush vegetation and scenic views of the water. Go fishing in the small Ada Safari lake in the center of the peninsula for common carp and rare tench. Visit the adjacent zoo to see ducks, swans and peacocks.
Enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants overlooking the water. The area has many kiosks, shops and cafés to serve all your needs.
Ada Ciganlija lies on the Sava River in the Čukarica district a little west of central Belgrade. Take the tram to Gospodarska Mehana or the train to Belgrade Center Station, which are both on the eastern side of the river. There is a fee to enter the peninsula by car. Access it on foot for free. Visit nearby attractions, such as the Hippodrome Belgrade, Belgrade Fair and Mikser House.
