I have always thought of the Red Lion Inn as a special place. On my way from Finger Lakes NY area to Maine over the last 3 decades, I've often stopped there for respite and enjoyment. This stay was planned for that. The desk staff, new to the Inn, were lovely and helpful. The bar and Lion's Den folks were professional, but very busy talking to locals to attend fully to visitors. On the other hand, the folks I fell into conversation with were welcoming and interesting!
The Red Lion is known for its century-or-more-old faded elegance--very New England. But this time it seemed a little less attended to than in the past. The room was fine, but in need of attention--minor but noticeable things like curling linoleum in the bathroom made for a less happy experience. The major issue, however, was the fact that the neighboring room was playing the television starting at 3:40 am. The walls of the old place are not much of a sound barrier!
I love staying in the old section, but might rethink that decision next time.
