The Neighborhood:
Northport has always been a favorite vacation spot for Michigan and the lower states. Set on Grand Traverse Bay (with a modernized marina) it is just two miles west to Lake Michigan, site of countless beautiful sunsets. And the surrounding area? Grapes, cherries, apples! It’s a wonder to behold in the spring and in the fall. So whether you’re into biking, boating, sailing, wine tours or just hanging out on the beach, Northport is really something special.
Getting Around:
Northport is located in one of the most beautiful areas in the country, amid vineyards and cherry and apple orchards, right on Grand Traverse Bay and only two miles east of Lake Michigan. Along with a newly refurbished marina and swimming beach, a new 9-hole golf course, a micro-brewery, a wine-tasting room and several new restaurants, the town also boasts a strong artistic presence and a healthy farm-to-table culture.
Nearby attractions include Sleeping Bear Dunes, named by ABC’s Good Morning America as “The Most Beautiful Place in America.”
27 miles south is Traverse City, home of Michael Moore’s annual Film Festival, and ranked among the best “foodie” cities in the country. Ten miles south is the Leelanau Sands Casino, owned by the native American Anishabeck. Twelve miles away is Leland, and historic Fishtown. Just two miles north is the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, and Leelanau State Park, complete with campground, hiking trails, and a lighthouse.
Northport is probably the best kept secret on the peninsula. While other towns have become tourist meccas, Northport retains its small-town character. The year-round population of 600 continues pretty much as they have since the town was first founded by French explorers. And while the summertime brings a surge in the populace, there’s still plenty of space for pursuing all the outdoor activities northern Michigan is known for.
