I have previously stayed at other Microtels and have enjoyed the clean and comfortable accommodations while not breaking the bank. When my elderly mother and I arrived to check in yesterday, March 19th, we were surprised when the desk employee asked if we wanted a non-smoking room, as I had indicated as such in the booking process. The employee went to “find” us a non-smoking room. When she returned, she told us that the card machine was still not working so she left the door open for us. Although the sign on the door indicated our room was non-smoking, the room reeked of cigarette smoke. As we began to settle into our room, it quickly became evident that, unfortunately, the lack of key and smoke smell were just the tip of the iceberg. We found mold around the window, no hair dryer, stains on the comforter, all four wall-lamp shades askew, cigarette burns on night stands, broken tiles in the bathroom, and the most upsetting, dirty towels hanging in the bathroom. My elderly mother and I left for dinner and secured a room at another hotel. When we returned to get our belongings and told the employee why we were leaving, she said she was “sorry” and “would look into it.”
