This home is just a short drive to some of the most traversed beaches in Maine, including OOB, Portland's waterfront, or thriving downtown Biddeford.
History of Smith Farm: (Created by your host) The Smith farm was built in the 1840’s and encompassed over 100 acres bordering the nearby Saco River. The farmland is now a community of 10 estate size lots. In the early days, Sokokis Indians migrated up to this area and camped and fished along the Saco river during the summers.
Smith farm was in the Smith family for many generations. They grew their own produce and kept laying hens in 2 barns on the northerly hill bordering the apple orchard.
Years ago, while the owner was installing wind powered water pumps to wells, a worker found Civil War letters in the apartment over the garage.
The original owner of Smith Farm is buried at the Tory Hill Cemetery in Buxton, Maine.
River Ridge Drive was once the main road for horses and wagon traffic, and it continued where our current driveway is and across the lower fields. It was replaced by Route 5.
Today, the original farmhouse has been completely renovated and updated with 2 additional apartments added. The property has a fire pit, horseshoe pit, kayaks, and snow-showing available in the winter, and lots of areas to explore nature. The Saco River below the Skelton Damn is a common place to put in kayaks/canoes to then paddle to the Route 5 bridge.
