There is something about a visit to Newfoundland and Labrador that changes you. The natural environment and legendary heritage give you a new way of experiencing the world. Losing yourself in this culture is as easy as opening the door of our 100+ year old oceanfront, biscuit box house nestled into the rocky cliff of Bay Roberts. This cozy retreat occupies one of the best spots on the harbour’s edge for unparalleled views of the Bay, Fergus Island and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Built in 1919, with low ceilings and exposed beams, our simple fisherman’s cottage is the ideal refuge to watch fishing boats and icebergs drift by or a storm blow in. Awaken to the sunrise over the ocean, enjoy the salt breeze from the outdoor deck, and pick blueberries from the rock cliff rising behind the house. Be still and curl up under a quilt with a warm tea and good book. Or hike the magnificent Shoreline Heritage Walking Trail. The trailhead of this renowned 6km costal walking trail is only 400 meters from the front door. Wander along sheer cliffs, sweeps of beach, sheltered coves and craggy headlands while listening to the sounds of the whales following capelin into the Bay. Experience the breathless exhilaration of the powerful waves and salty spray at Mad Rocks. And be sure to stop by the quaint MadRocks Café for a warmest Newfoundland welcome and one their famous “toutons”

Fresh and newly updated, our cottage maintains its heritage nature. Ceiling height in some areas of the main floor and some doorways approx. 6’1”, steep stairs and uneven floors.

Live like a local bayman, discovering the best hidden gems, restaurants, trails and outport communities along the eastern shore. Conveniently located 5 minutes from the town of Bay Roberts, our cottage is the perfect location from which to explore. One hour from downtown St. John’s and the airport, this little red house by the sea is your perfect homebase for day trips to St. John’s, Brigus, Bonavista, Trinity, etc.

Wonderful stay..
We thought it was a lot of house for the money. Kitchen was well appointed and easy to navigate. House was quirky but we enjoyed it. Especially enjoyed hiking on the nearby trail. Also recommend the cable museum,,and a visit to Brigus. One should also know that Bay Roberts has all the stores etc,,but no downtown section and there is a fairly busy road in front of the house.

The neighborhood you'll find very quickly is the warmest you've ever seen. Head up to mad rock cafe for breakfast (fish cakes & toutons) then hike the trail from the cafe to mad rock. The property is extremely relaxed & lovely. I would have loved to see the basics added to their kitchen (like oil, salt, and vinegar). As well don't forget your shampoo and conditioner - there is none on the property.

The authenticity of the home is bang on! The Host was really amazing and very quick to respond. But honestly we were just not comfortable here at all. While the listing notes uneven floors that is an understatement. We didn't realize how bad the home was. Its not recommended if you get Vertigo easily what so ever. Everything is effected including showering, stove, right up to laying in bed! You always felt you were on TILT! The beds were not good at all for two couples...the twin beds are better suited for small tots, but you won't want to have tots in the home due to the stairs and low upper wall around the staircase, would be afraid they would go over! The double bed is small of coarse but not super on the comfort side! Don't plan to sleep in, the sun comes up and blasts the double room as well as no mention that the road is literally right beside the front wall of the home! Loved the effort on touches of the home that was done well....but just fell short on comfort for the four of us.....

Quaint getaway in Newfoundland
We loved the charming quaintness of this home--low ceilings, squeaky floors... you'll really feel like you stepped back in time! Another huge plus is that it's walkable to a really beautiful seaside trail with sweeping views. One word of warning is that you're located right on a major road. We didn't find the traffic noise disturbing, and you still have a great view of the sea, but FYI as it's probably not ideal for families with younger children.

My friend and I had an absolutely lovely time in November. A perfectly cozy setup for a nice quiet weekend away. Read the description of the property and you won't be disappointed. Quick and easy communication, lovely location. Be sure to bring grippy socks or other footwear or risk being caught unaware by the slope. We're already looking forward to our next visit.
