Photos displayed in this historic museum provide a window into the park’s appearance during the tumultuous eruptions and rock avalanches of the early 1900s.

The Loomis Museum contains fascinating exhibits explaining the natural history of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The museum has a bookstore, an auditorium and a host of programs and activities led by rangers. Pick up a brochure in this charming museum to learn about the rock formations, lakes and volcanic activity in the park.

Admire the stone façade of the museum building, which was constructed in 1927 by local photographer Benjamin Franklin Loomis. Spot the word “MUSEUM” mounted in carved blocks above the main entrance. The single-story edifice features an auditorium and harmonizes well with the surrounding forest.

Study the amazing photos taken by Loomis of the park during the eruption of Lassen Peak in the early 20th century. Check out the old-world tools the photographer used in his endeavor. Chat with the rangers about the displays to gather extra information about Loomis and the park. The museum also presents a film on the natural history of the region.

As you make your way through the exhibits, you’ll see basketry made by Atsugewi people. Purchase cards, maps and a range of souvenirs in the gift shop. For a change of scenery, embark on one of the trails in the area for a short hike. Sleep beneath the stars at the Manzanita Lake Campground or the Manzanita Lake Camping Cabins.

Note that the museum closes from November to late May. In summer, it is open to the public daily from morning until late afternoon, while only active Friday through Sunday in spring and fall.

The Loomis Museum is on the southeastern corner of Reflection Lake near the northwestern entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. It is just off the highway, a little north of Manzanita Creek and its namesake lake. Explore the area for other delights such as the Lassen Peak Vista Point, the Dwarf Forest and Chaos Crags and Jumbles.
